Using Your Ledger Device for Bitcoin and Stacks Transactions

How can I use my Ledger device with Leather?

Since 2014, Ledger has allowed users to buy, exchange and manage their crypto assets securely with Ledger hardware wallets and the Ledger Live app. Today, Leather users can also integrate a Ledger device with their Leather extension application, giving them an extra layer of security while they conduct their Bitcoin and Stacks transactions.

This includes Ordinals-related transactions, giving Leather users another option to securely engage with one of the most innovative protocols to hit the Bitcoin blockchain in years.

Getting Started with Ledger

To integrate a Ledger device with your Leather extension, you can follow these steps:

  1. Download and open the Ledger Live app.

  2. Click the “Get Started” button on the Ledger Live app homepage.

  3. Choose the Ledger device you want to connect.

  4. If you haven’t set up your Ledger device, you’ll need to select the first option to set up a new Ledger device. If you’ve already set up your Ledger device on your computer, you can scroll to the “Already Have a Recovery Phrase?” section in the Ledger Live app and choose to connect the appropriate device.

  5. To set up a new Ledger device, you’ll need to connect your Ledger device to your computer and follow the instructions in the Ledger Live app. This includes coming up with a PIN that will be unique to your Ledger device. You can think of your PIN as the equivalent of a password that allows you to access your device (but that differs from your private key).

  6. If you had previously set up a Ledger device, you should be able to directly connect to Ledger Live using the PIN you chose when you initially set up your Ledger device.

  7. On the main Leather extension browser page, hit the “Use Ledger” option.

  8. Select the “Connect Bitcoin” or “Connect Stacks” option. Both are available via Ledger Live, though you need to have the preferred app downloaded (the Bitcoin or Stacks app).

Once you have completed those steps, your Ledger wallet will be accessible when you open the Leather extension.
